What the First Week After a Tummy Tuck Really Looks Like
Let's be honest from the jump: the first week after an abdominoplasty is not easy. Pain levels vary widely from woman to woman — some feel manageable discomfort, others describe it as excruciating. Both experiences are valid, and both are normal.
One myth worth busting right now: liposuction does not hurt less than a tummy tuck. I have heard this floating around for years, and it is simply not true. With a tummy tuck, you have a long incision that requires careful movement. With liposuction, you feel like you got hit by a bus — bruised, swollen, sore everywhere. Most of my girls come in having had combination procedures (tummy tuck + lipo + BBL or breast work), and both types of pain are very real. Even with Exparel (a long-acting nerve block some surgeons use), you will still feel sensations and discomfort in those first 24–48 hours.
Knowing this ahead of time is not meant to scare you. It is meant to help you prepare smarter.
Recliner vs. Bed: What Actually Works for Tummy Tuck Recovery
This is one of the biggest questions I get, and after weeks of watching different women try different setups, the answer is clear: an electric power-lift recliner is your best friend after a tummy tuck.
Here is why.
After an abdominoplasty, your surgeon will tell you to rest at an angle — knees bent, feet elevated, back slightly upright. You cannot lay flat. The challenge with a regular bed (even an adjustable one) is that you still have to swing your legs over the side and engage your core to get in and out. That movement is painful, especially in the first few days.
A power-lift recliner eliminates that problem entirely. You lean against it, press a button, and it brings you from a reclined position all the way up to standing — without straining your abdomen at all. My girls who use it consistently choose it over the adjustable bed every single time.
Where to find one:
Amazon (can ship to your door before surgery).
Facebook Marketplace (great for renting or buying secondhand).
Local furniture stores that offer short-term rentals.
Once you have your recliner, build your nest around it. I love combining it with:
A wedge system for proper angle and positioning
Regular bed pillows for arm and side support
A U-shaped pregnancy pillow for extra comfort and cushion
How to Recover Safely After a Tummy Tuck + BBL
If you had a Brazilian Butt Lift alongside your tummy tuck, you are working with some competing recovery rules — and it takes a little creativity to navigate safely.
The golden rule: protect your tummy tuck at all costs. Do not lay on your stomach.
When you have a BBL alone, laying on your stomach takes pressure off your results. But with a tummy tuck, that position is off the table. So how do you keep pressure off your butt while laying on your back?
Here is what works in the recliner:
Use a firm BBL pillow (the hard one, not the soft cloud pillow) placed under your thighs while seated in the recliner. This transfers the pressure away from your butt.
You will not be fully suspended in the air — there will be some light contact — but it significantly reduces the pressure on your grafted fat.
Other options for tummy tuck + BBL recoveries:
Lawn chairs with a cutout at the seat (DIY or available online) let your butt hang through
A memory foam mattress with a butt cutout is another option women use at home
It is a challenge. I will not sugarcoat it. But with the right setup and some patience, you absolutely can do it.
Essential Home Recovery Gear: The Full List
Based on what I have seen work at The Recovery Haven, here is the gear that makes a real difference for tummy tuck recovery at home:
Electric Power-Lift Recliner
Already covered above — this is the #1 investment you can make for your home recovery.
Toilet Riser
This one is a 10 out of 10 game changer, and it does not get talked about enough. A toilet riser is a thick piece of plastic that sits over your toilet bowl to raise the seat height. After a tummy tuck, you cannot bend low and use your core to sit and stand from a low toilet — it is painful and risky. A riser lets most women sit down and get back up on their own, maintaining independence during those first two weeks. You will probably only use it for 1–2 weeks, but those will be the most important two weeks of your recovery.
Shower Chair
For your first post-op shower, having a shower chair available is essential. Most of my girls end up sitting for their first shower — the warm water running over them while they relax and get cleaned up is incredibly therapeutic. That first shower makes you feel human again. You do not have to sit, but having the option is everything.
Compression Socks
Do not skip these. If you had a long surgery — 5, 6, or 8 hours — compression socks are critical for circulation and blood clot prevention in those first few days. Put them on before you start walking.
Walker
Not every surgeon recommends one, so check with yours first. But if they give the green light, a walker can make those first terrifying steps feel much more manageable. Use it for the first 3–4 days, then try to wean off it so your body starts building strength independently.
Wedge System + Pillows
A good foam wedge paired with pillows lets you dial in the exact reclined position your surgeon recommends. Do not try to improvise with just pillows — a real wedge holds its shape through the night.
Walking, Blood Clots & Staying Safe
This cannot be stressed enough: you must walk after a tummy tuck. Every two to three hours. Even if it is just a few slow steps around the room.
Walking keeps your blood circulating, reduces your risk of dangerous blood clots, and speeds up your overall recovery. Wear your compression socks, use your walker if needed, and take it slow. You will be hunched over — that is completely normal in the first week. Your body is protecting the incision site.
As your pain decreases, try to stand a little straighter each day. Progress, not perfection.
Your First Post-Op Shower
When your surgeon clears you for your first shower (typically day 2 or 3), here is what to keep in mind:
Have your shower chair set up and ready
Have someone present in case you need help
Sit and let the water do the work — you do not need to scrub or strain
Keep it short — you will tire out faster than you expect
Pat incisions dry gently afterward and follow your surgeon's wound care instructions
Wash your hands before touching any incision site
That first shower is going to feel like a miracle. Enjoy it.
Choosing the Right Stage 1 Compression After a Tummy Tuck
Compression garments are essential after a tummy tuck, but the wrong one can actually cause serious harm.
In the first two weeks, you want soft, stretchy material only. No power net. No extremely firm fajas. Nothing that restricts your breathing or cuts into your incision line.
The #1 risk of wearing a garment that is too tight in those early weeks is cutting off circulation to your incision, which can lead to necrosis — and that is a complication nobody wants. You do not need to be maximally compressed right after surgery. Your body needs room to heal.
Signs your garment is too tight:
You cannot breathe comfortably
You feel numbness or tingling at the incision line
The garment is digging into skin

Managing Post-Op Constipation (Let's Talk About It)
Here is the topic nobody prepares you for enough: narcotic-induced constipation is extremely common after a tummy tuck, and it can be genuinely miserable.
Out of the last five women I hosted at The Recovery Haven:
One went on Day 3
One went on Day 4
One went on Day 6
One went on Day 7
We celebrate every single one of those moments. Because not being able to go causes real, uncomfortable bloating and pressure — the last thing you need on top of surgery recovery.
Mavi's constipation protocol:
Start a stool softener the same day you start your pain medication — do not wait for constipation to happen, prevent it
Smooth Move Tea — a gentle laxative tea, widely available
Prunes — classic for a reason
Flaxseed concoction — Mavi's mom has a homemade blend of flaxseeds and natural ingredients that she makes for recovery suite guests
Milk of magnesia or magnesium — the last resort that gets the job done.
For the first day or two, eat light: Jello, broth, soups. Bone broth is especially great for hydration and protein. After that, move into a high protein, high fiber, low sodium diet. Avoid fried foods. Drink water consistently.
Mental Recovery: The Part Nobody Talks About
Surgery is physical, but recovery is mental too. There will be a moment — maybe day two, maybe day three — where you wonder what on earth you were thinking. That moment is normal. Almost every woman goes through it.
Use this time intentionally. Rest is medicine, but you can also use these quiet days to reflect, dream, set goals, and start planning the next chapter of your life. The women who come through The Recovery Haven often describe this as an unexpected gift — a forced pause that helped them reconnect with themselves.
